Stunned by the untimely death of writer-director John Hughes this past August, movie fans the world over showered the filmmaker's beloved '80s teen comedies - "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," "Weird Science" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" - with nostalgic praise and spoke of the impact those films had on their lives. While those titles hold much significance for me as well (I've seen one of them at least 50 times - Cinema File readers probably can guess which), it's Hughes' decidedly more adult departure from youth-centered success that has been a staple of holiday viewing in the Shearer house for more than a decade: the Thanksgiving road comedy "Planes, Trains & Automobiles."
